Mouth Guards are used to protect the teeth and oral structures from injury when playing a contact sport. Just one hard hit can lead to a lifetime of oral health problems and challenges. By wearing a mouth guard, you can give yourself the best possible chance of avoiding injury. Allen Dental Center offers custom-fitted mouth guards that maximize both protection and comfort.
Some of the problems that may be prevented by wearing a mouth guard during athletic competition include:
Our mouth guards are effective because they are custom-made based on impressions that are taken of the patient’s teeth. This allows them to offer superior comfort and protection when compared to store-bought alternatives. The vast majority of our patients who use them report that they do not interfere with their usual breathing or speaking. We also use the highest-quality materials available in our mouth guards so that they feel lightweight and retain maximum durability even with regular usage. In most cases, our mouth guards will last between two and three years before needing to be replaced.
Since these are custom-designed appliances, a patient will need to make at least two visits to our practice in order to receive their own mouth guard. The first visit will involve taking impressions of the teeth.
We will forward these impressions to a dental laboratory so that a mouth guard can be built. Once it is ready, the patient will return for a follow-up visit to pick it up.
Allen Dental Center also offers night guards for the treatment of bruxism. This is a sleep condition in which a person will excessively clench and grind their teeth while they are sleeping. This can cause the teeth to become damaged if action is not taken. Some of the problems that can occur as a result of bruxism include chipped and cracked teeth, jaw pain, tension headaches, tooth fractures and damaged tooth enamel. Wearing a protective night guard can go a long way towards preventing these issues. Most patients who use them find that they are very comfortable and that they do not interfere with their regular sleeping at all. In fact, the majority of patients find that their sleeping patterns improve and that they feel more rested.
